Wedding at the William Gray Hotel – Belle + Simon

wedding photographer hotel willam gray montreal 01

Belle and Simon chose the Hotel William Gray in Old Montreal for their wedding reception. Their wedding took place last fall, at the end of October, and it was my last wedding of the year. I couldn't have asked for a better way to end a 2025 filled with so many beautiful weddings! The couple wasn't particularly keen on having photos taken during their preparations, so I joined them at the hotel around lunchtime. They opted for a first look before taking photos with their families and then their couple's portraits in Old Montreal. The first look took place on the magnificent staircase of the William Gray. I think I managed to capture the perfect expression on Simon's face when he saw his bride for the first time. She surprised him with a non-traditional, colorful, and sparkling dress!

I thought Belle's parents were brave to have arrived from Taiwan just a few days before the wedding. It wasn't warm that day, and there was quite a temperature difference between Taiwan and Montreal! They were able to take photos without coats even though they were a bit cold. My assistant was holding everyone's coats at one point; his arms were full of them, haha!

Once the family photos were taken, we went for a walk not far from the William Gray to take the couple's photos. I thought the couple was so incredibly cute, interacting with each other. Funny, generous, open, and expressive!

The ceremony at St. Patrick's Basilica

Located in downtown Montreal, the Basilica was built in 1847. And it's MAGNIFICENT! Surprisingly, it was my first time there! The couple, very religious, often went on Sundays to celebrate Mass. And they always envisioned having their wedding ceremony there. I completely understand them; St. Patrick's Basilica is grand and overflowing with countless details!

Since we were essentially Ubers for the bride and groom, hahaha, we made a quick detour behind Montreal City Hall to snap a few quick photos of the newlyweds. We were a little short on time before the ceremony, so we made up for it with the beautiful fall colors in the trees!

Cocktail at the Hotel William Gray and the advantages of a first look

The advantage of having a first look is that the bride and groom can be present at the cocktail hour. I completely understand their desire to be there. If I were getting married, I would want to do the same. The cocktail hour was held outside the Edward Room, the reception hall for the bride and groom. Another advantage of taking photos before the ceremony is that you can take advantage of the beautiful afternoon light in autumn. Whereas on this last weekend of October, the light was fading quickly. The third advantage is that if there are any delays during the preparations, you can always catch up by taking a second set of couple photos. I also often feel that there is less stress for the bride and groom when they see each other before the ceremony and have their photos taken. They also get to spend more time together on this incredibly important day in their lives!

The wedding reception at the William Gray Hotel

It is DJ DK The bride's sister, who was in charge of the music, provided the entertainment for the lovely evening at the William Gray Hotel. The guests were all delighted to be there to celebrate with the newlyweds. There were several touching speeches, which brought tears to a few eyes in the reception hall. The bride and groom had also set up several stations to keep the guests entertained, just in case there were any lulls—but there weren't any, haha! There was a table for doing a puzzle and another for making little bracelets. I thought it was such a thoughtful touch from the bride and groom!

The newlyweds went from table to table to say "cheers" to their guests. We took the opportunity to take photos with each table. One normal photo, all smiles, and then another, a bit funnier. I always enjoy taking these kinds of photos with guests. You see another side of them, and I find it amusing.

Since the stairs at the Basilica weren't very large for the group photo, we took advantage of the grand staircase at the William Gray Hotel to take it in the evening. At one point, my assistant and I wondered if the staircase would hold up, haha! Luckily, it did! And then, once the meal and games were over, the dancing began. The bride and groom didn't really want to have a first dance, but they managed to get everyone onto the dance floor and let loose.

      Cabaret Lion d'Or in Montreal – R + T LGBT Wedding

wedding old port montreal wedding 01

Tami and Rachel chose the Cabaret Lion d'Or in Montreal for their wedding last October. A couple since 2021, the two complement each other so well; it was a real joy for me to photograph their wedding. I'm still pinching myself at how much fun I had with them and their loved ones!

The bridesmaids weren't keen on having photos taken during their preparations. But when I learned they had rented an Airbnb in Old Montreal, I offered to meet them there when they were ready. The couple absolutely wanted photos in nature and hadn't considered, when renting the apartment, that some of their couple's photos would be taken there. So Tami went downstairs first to take some portraits and photos with her wedding party before having a first look with her sweetheart. The couple hadn't yet envisioned themselves as brides! Dressed by SuitableIn a custom-made outfit, she looked incredibly chic!

And what a first look it was! Tami's jaw dropped when she saw her sweetheart arrive behind her! The first look is such an emotional and exciting moment! They didn't regret doing it at all!

Tami's boutonniere, Rachel's wedding bouquet, and the floral arrangements at the reception were created by The Floret Flowers located in Verdun. I think the colors of the girls' dresses, outfits, and flowers make for a very beautiful color scheme. It really represents fall weddings, in my opinion! After the first look, we continued with photos of the bridal party and some photos with the brides in Old Montreal. Very close to the apartment rented for the occasion is the magnificent building of St. James TheatreFortunately, it was unoccupied at that time and we were able to take many photos in a short amount of time.

A quick stop before the Cabaret Lion d'Or!

The initial plan was to go to Lafontaine Park for the couple's photos, so we had a schedule to keep, haha! We then loaded the brides into our car to act as Ubers, haha! It was while we were on our way there that I saw the magnificent trees behind Montreal City Hall in Champ-de-Mars Park. I quickly suggested to the girls that we go there since it was already October 18th and the fall colours were still to come in at Lafontaine Park. I had checked the day before by going there myself. On the day of the wedding, I found the trees in Champ-de-Mars to be much more beautiful than those in the Plateau. It must depend on the species of tree; some take a little longer than others to turn colour. But I really appreciated the couple's flexibility because there are often unexpected things that happen on a wedding day, and you have to be able to adapt. What we hadn't anticipated, however, was the biting cold/wind that we weren't used to yet, so it was a good excuse for them to snuggle up!

Wedding ceremony at the Cabaret Lion d'Or

When the bride and groom saw the Cabaret Lion d'Or, they knew immediately that it was the perfect place to celebrate their ceremony and then hold their reception there in the evening. Since they are of different faiths (Catholic and Jewish), the bright, airy stage was ideal for their ceremony.

It was after the couple's photos, upon arriving at the venue, that I saw the magnificent room, decorated and all ready. We arrived five minutes before the chairs were moved for the ceremony. I was lucky, I must admit! Fifteen minutes later, everything was set up for the ceremony. Then, at the cocktail hour, there would have been guests everywhere, and that would have made things a bit difficult for me, haha!

The Art Deco-inspired decor and lighting made the ceremony truly theatrical and magnificent! You should have seen Tamy's face when Rachel arrived, as if they hadn't seen each other just moments before, even though they were together in the dressing room in the basement! They were beautiful, and their eyes shone with happiness!

      A fantastic wedding reception!

The cocktail hour having been short, the atmosphere quickly became festive when the brides made their official "entrance" to the music of DJ Or from ANDR MusicWith lots of dancing at the beginning of the reception, it set the tone for the evening ahead. And we weren't bored for a second! With moving speeches that touched me deeply—I even shed a tear, something that never happens to me—the events flowed seamlessly. It was festive, heartfelt, beautiful; everyone was happy and glad to be there on this wonderful day! I adored the brides: their big hearts, kindness, thoughtful touches, and good humor made it all go by far too quickly!

William Gray Wedding in Old Montreal

It was at the chic William Gray Hotel, located in Old Montreal, that Alexandre and Katherine got married. About a hundred hand-picked guests attended the celebration. Alexandre's very close family had arrived a few days earlier from France. Having met at work, the lovers have been a couple since 2019. It was during a trip to Thailand, to Koh Lanta (nicknamed the island at the end of the world) that Alexandre proposed to his sweetheart! In the middle of the sunset, no less! The height of romance!

The long-awaited day began with Alexandre getting ready at the home of a couple of friends who were part of the wedding party. The groom seemed very zen and happy! I was accompanied by my faithful assistant Miguel, my boyfriend, who was filming for the occasion. We then headed to Old Montreal. Where Katherine and her wedding party were getting ready in an Airbnb rented since the day before.

        Ceremony at William Gray

Having been referred by a friend whose wedding I photographed in 2009, the bride and groom contacted me before even choosing the location and date of their wedding! It was a little over a year before their big day. They wanted to know my availability first and foremost and references of places that would suit them to celebrate their love. I remember referring the William Gray Hotel, among 3-4 places for the perfect rental in Old Montreal. I had been dreaming of photographing a wedding there for a few years because I had seen photos of their beautiful majestic staircase in the heart of the Hotel. So that's where they finally chose to have the ceremony and reception. Also a question of limiting the guests' travel.

In the Old Port of Montreal

Once the ceremony was over, it was a race against time to take the couple photos in Old Montreal. We also had the wedding party photos to take and the family photos. As well as a few shots inside the limousine followed by two group photos. The stairs weren't wide enough to fit everyone haha!

When I met the lovers, they talked to me about wanting to do an engagement session. In order to get to know each other but also, above all, to be more comfortable on the big day. Moreover, at the beginning of the engagement session, I asked them if they weren't too nervous... And both of them exclaimed at the same time by answering: YES! It made me laugh... And on the wedding day, they did it like real pros! The embarrassment and nervousness having taken over. They were thus able to use some photos from this session for the decoration of the room, as a sign at the entrance and on the menu for the evening.

Wedding reception at the William Gray Hotel

Back at the William Gray Hotel, we were able to attend the end of the cocktail party. We took the opportunity to take family photos before entering the room. The room being the same for the ceremony and the reception, the hotel staff took advantage of this "in-between" to change the decoration. They put the finishing touches on the tables before the evening began. Often at the cocktail party it is the opportunity or never for me to take photos of decorations before the guests enter. Everything was ready to welcome the group, it was chic and tasteful. Everything went wonderfully during the evening. There were touching speeches, very touching even, games and dancing!

          Hotel Place d'Armes, Montreal – Wedding of Y + M

Last August, at the Hotel Place D'Armes in Old Montreal, I had the privilege of being Yukiko and Mark's wedding photographer. The couple lives in British Columbia, and we had met for the first time a year before the big day, via video conference. From our very first meeting, I found them adorable together, as if they were just starting out in their relationship. But no, they've been together since 2016! Mark, originally from England, practiced his French during our meeting—it was charming! While I was a student in Montreal some time ago, that's where the couple fell in love: in a McGill University lab!

During their years in Montreal, the couple always loved the Old Port. In fact, that was the main reason they chose the Hotel Place D'Armes for their ceremony and reception. They were charmed by the building's architecture and the quality of service. The couple also wanted a venue easily accessible by public transportation, as a third of their guests were coming from outside the city. I remember being eager to meet Yukiko and Mark, because we had laughed so much during our two online meetings. I knew the day would go well and that we would have a great time together!

Indoor ceremony at the Hotel Place D'Armes

We were hoping until the very last minute that the ceremony would take place on the roof. But the rain kept coming and going. So the couple didn't want to take any risks and decided to get married inside the hotel, in a room reserved for the ceremony. The officiant was one of their friends. The ceremony was beautiful, moving, and joyful. I even held back tears when Mark read his vows!

Yuki's mom told me her daughter was thrilled with my attitude towards the rain. That reassured her somewhat. The rain didn't bother me, and anyway, it doesn't matter when you're in Montreal's Old Port. There are always plenty of ways to take beautiful photos, and the light was magnificent! But you have to be more focused to be efficient. We also had the help of a bridesmaid and a groomsman to carry the umbrellas.

          Surprise Surprise in Old Montreal!

The rain stopped for a few minutes, just in time for the family photos. But I also wanted to take pictures with the wedding party in front of the hotel, and then it started pouring again! Really, really pouring! I remember the look of surprise on the faces of the wedding party and the bride and groom when they saw the rain falling while they were safely inside. And my boyfriend and I were out on the street! They must have felt sorry for the photographer (and videographer, who is also my partner). Luckily, we had umbrellas with us!

wedding procession in front of the Hotel Place D'Armes

wedding procession in the entrance of the Hotel Place D'Armes

So we finally decided to go up to the roof... and I still can't believe it, but we were stuck in the elevator for at least twenty minutes! There were twelve of us in a small space (including a pregnant bridesmaid)! And to top it all off, the fire department even came to rescue us! I was so nervous I forgot to take a picture of the fire truck, lol. Because of this, I thought we wouldn't have enough time for couple photos. So I decided it was best to take shelter from the rain under the tall buildings of Old Montreal, just with Yuki and Mark at first. We then called the wedding party to join us while there was still some time left during the cocktail hour.

Wedding reception at the Hotel Place D'Armes

I still can't quite believe it, but after all the unexpected twists and turns, we arrived at the Hôtel Place D'Armes right on time for the bride and groom's arrival. The guests were thrilled to be there. The evening was fantastic, with speeches, laughter, tears of joy, engaging conversations, and plenty of fun, including a photo booth. The dancing started at the end of dinner, and the guests were incredible. They absolutely rocked the dance floor! It was packed the whole time, and I almost wanted to stay until very late. But my workday (sometimes it felt like it wasn't really a workday at all) was over, and what an intense day we had! Intense in the best possible way, of course!

            Wedding at the Saint-Gabriel Inn

Wedding photographer at Auberge Saint-Gabriel, Le Grenier room

Geneviève and Mathieu waited a long time for their wedding day celebrated at the Auberge Saint-Gabriel last summer! Since they were supposed to say yes the year a certain pandemic broke out. The project therefore had five potential dates attached to it. Each time we thought it would be the right one, but the situation lasted quite a long time as we all know. And it was always with hope and optimism that we wrote to each other in the meantime. Let's put the pandemic behind us then. I was so happy that day to find them again! Finally it was THEIR day and they were going to get married!

So I started the day by going to meet Mathieu, who lives not far from me. He was getting ready at home with the couple's boys. It was a beautiful hot summer day, Mathieu seemed very zen. A few photos of getting ready later, portraits and photos with the kids then I headed to Old Montreal. Arriving at the Lofts du Vieux-Port, Geneviève and her gang were being pampered by the professional team of Caroline Théorêt. The girls had slept there the night before, everything happened in the loft: makeup and hair.

On the wedding day, you sometimes have to be flexible on the schedule. I had established one with Geneviève but everything doesn't always go as planned. It's better to have a precise schedule and to be able to easily adapt when there are unforeseen events. And there are quite a few unforeseen events all the time on a wedding day haha! The bride had more bridesmaids than initially planned so the preparation took a little longer. We were supposed to do the bride and groom's first look with the procession and the photos with them at the same time.

Then, we decided that we would postpone everything until after the ceremony because we would run out of time for the lovebirds' photos. We joined Mathieu who was waiting for us outside the Auberge St-Gabriel with the boys. We took the opportunity to take a few photos with the children. We then went to walk the streets of Old Montreal, in search of shade and beautiful light.

            Ceremony at the Auberge Saint-Gabriel

Even though they did a first look before, the lovers were also excited to see each other during the ceremony. Geneviève walked down the aisle with stars in her eyes. The emotion was palpable. The ceremony, officiated by the bride's brother, was personalized, just like them. Geneviève's brother being very funny and quick-witted, it was one of my favorite ceremonies. Everything took place in the La Grange room at the Auberge St-Gabriel, on the very top floor of the building. Right next to the reception that would take place in the evening.

Reception in the La Grange room of the Auberge Saint-Gabriel

I have photographed weddings at Auberge St-Gabriel many times. But I had never been to the room reserved by the couple. It really was like a barn, but in the city. And it is right in the middle of Old Montreal! Built at the end of the 17th century, the inn is a place full of history! To think that the ceiling beams or even the stone are over 300 years old is pretty crazy. It gives a very warm atmosphere to the room and it needs very little decoration to be dazzling!
